Consider solar/wind energy for Portmore

Published:Tuesday | November 12, 2024 | 12:06 AM

THE EDITOR, Madam:

With a career spanning 44 years in international energy consulting and project implementation, I respectfully submit the following estimates for the consideration of the mayors, other leaders and citizens of Portmore, Spanish Town, Kingston & St Andrew, and your general readership:

Assumptions about Portmore, St Catherine, Jamaica:

• 40,000 households by 2026;

• 60 per cent of households require ACs (4.6 kW each) to counter discomfort;

• having higher temperature and mosquitoes;

• 40 per cent of households do not require ACs (2.8 kW each);

• 60 MW for light industries.

Calculations of total power consumption:

• AC households: 40,000 x 60 per cent x 4.6 kW = 110,400 kW = 110.4 MW

• Non-AC households: 40,000 x 40 per cent x 2.8 kW = 44,800 kW = 44.8 MW

• Total household power consumption: 110,400 kW + 44,800 kW = 155,200 kW = 155.2 MW

Total power demand:

• Household + industrial: 155.2 MW + 60 MW = 215.2 MW

By 2027, the projected power demand for Portmore in South St Catherine is approximately 215.2 MW. This is the capacity required for a new solar/wind energy complex to meet the needs of the area at cost-effective power supply rates.

Additional considerations:

• Energy storage: If we consider incorporating energy storage solutions, like batteries or farmed biomass backup, to ensure a reliable power supply, especially during peak demand periods or when those particular renewable energy sources are not producing optimally.

• Grid integration: The integration of renewable energy into the existing grid requires careful planning and coordination with the utility company to ensure seamless operation and stability.

• Economic feasibility: Conduct a thorough economic analysis to assess the financial viability of the energy co-operative, including the costs of installation, operation, and maintenance.

• Environmental impact: Evaluate the potential environmental impacts of the solar and wind facilities, such as land use, noise pollution, and bird strikes.

• Community engagement: Involve the local community in the planning and decision-making processes to ensure their support and to address any concerns.

By carefully considering these factors, the energy co-operative can successfully implement the solar/wind energy complex and provide a sustainable and reliable power supply for Portmore, South St Catherine, Jamaica.
