This year will mark Jamaica’s 60th year of Independence, and the year-long celebrations are being observed under the theme ‘Reigniting a Nation for Greatness’. The period will showcase many exciting events which allow for the exposure of our varied creative industry talents.

Fine Art Photographer Gerald Gordon has created a series of photographs entitled ‘Life Inspired by Art’ to commemorate our nation’s diamond jubilee.

He told The Gleaner that throughout this year, as we celebrate Jamaica 60 at home and across the Jamaican diaspora, all Jamaicans must pause to reflect on the foundation laid by those who came before us.

“We are a proud people, and we are equally pleased about the things that make us unique. Sure, there is crime, poverty and economic challenges, but our spirit and tenacity remain undaunted, and we treasure all the wonderful things about this place we call home,” the photographer said.

For Gordon, it is important that we remember the sacrifices of our ancestors who were forcibly brought to these shores and endured much pain and humiliation.

Speaking of ‘Life inspired By Art’, he said, “This particular series is in sync with Jamaica’s 60th year of Independence, because as a nation, we are on a unique journey that will add to the development of our people in many different ways. Arts and culture play a vital role in our diverse nation, and in this way, we continue to maintain our importance on the world stage,” Gordon said.

The images were captured at the Blue Lagoon Beach in Portland, Portsmouth Community Playing Field in Portmore, St Catherine, and his photography studio.

“Jamaica is a country that is known for its rich and diverse art culture that we see on display right across the world stage. Ever since my photography career has shifted into a documented conceptual form, every story I tell through my lens is connected to my life and the things I live and see every day,” Gordon shared.
