Lawyer to be served with documents in Guardsman cocaine case

The case against two St. James men, who were arrested following the alleged seizure of 66 kilograms of cocaine in a Guardsman service vehicle last April, was deferred until October 9 when they appeared in court on Friday.

Owen Glaze and Andrew Brown had their bails extended when they appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court.  The presiding magistrate, Carolyn Tie, was told that attorney-at-law Ernie Smith, who had joined the defendants’ legal team, would need to be served with documents related to the case.

The allegations are that, on April 20, 2013, Glaze and Brown were arrested after the vehicle in which they were travelling was searched by the police in Mount Carey, St James. Cocaine, valued at approximately J$264 million, was found in the vehicle.

“Is the file in a state of readiness?” RM Tie asked clerk of the court Natalie Malcolm, when the case was mentioned on Friday.

“This week, some documents came in, and I believe that counsel (Ernie Smith) has not been served with all the documents,” said Malcolm, though she did not elaborate on what was to be served to the attorney.

“Seeing as the matter is set for service of documents, perhaps October 9 would be a convenient date,” attorney Smith suggested.

RM Tie subsequently extended Glaze’s and Brown’s bails to October 9.
