A St Elizabeth man has been sentenced to nine months imprisonment after pleading guilty to the unlawful wounding of another inmate while in the Santa Cruz lock-up.

However, the sentence will be suspended for one year.

On March 5, Oshane Brooks along with another man had a disagreement with the complainant which led to the man being beaten.

A female officer reportedly heard the commotion and went to investigate, finding the complainant bleeding from a wound on his head.

The man described Brooks and another man as his attackers.

Brooks had been in lock-up after he was charged with possession of identity information.

Although he had been offered bail on the charge he did not take up the offer as he says he was unable to afford the million-dollar bond.

Brooks' co-accused had the charges against him dismissed as he pleaded not guilty and did not sufficiently fit the description of the second attacker.
