‘Livity’ Coke will get nothing for prison injuries - court rules against granting compensation

Leighton ‘Livity’ Coke has failed in his bid to have the State compensate him for the alleged beating he received from soldiers at the Horizon Adult Remand Centre in 2012.

The Constitutional Court handed down a short while ago, its judgment in the suit brought by Coke.

Coke and five high-risk prisoners say they were severely beaten by the soldiers.

Coke contended that his constitutional rights were breached as a result of the beatings and that he was treated inhumanely during his incarceration.

The Jamaica Defence Force has reported that Coke received his injuries while being restrained after he attacked three soldiers.

The respondents in the suit were the Commissioner of Corrections, the Chief of Staff of the Jamaica Defence Force, the Ministry of National Security and the Attorney General.

Coke is being represented by attorneys-at-law Carolyn Reid-Cameron and Chukwuemeka Cameron.

Coke was facing gun charges at the Horizon Remand Centre for allegedly firing shots at members of the security forces while they were looking for his brother Christopher 'Dudus' Coke during the May 2010 police operation in Tivoli.

He is 37 years old.
