Firefighters from the Jamaica Fire Brigade kept busy yesterday morning putting out a raging fire at Westbrook Avenue in St Andrew.

The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) has taken action against the person on whose property tyres were lit yesterday.

Business operator and Riverton City resident, Michael Carter, was charged under section 45(b) of the NSWM Act for operating a disposal site without a valid licence or operating certificate.

Carter is now detained at the Seaview Gardens Police Station and will be offered bail.

If found guilty by a Resident Magistrate Court, Carter may be fined up to a $1 million or be imprisoned for up to a year.

According to the NSWMA, Carter was served with a seven-day Removal Notice under section 55(a) to clean and clear the area.

The authority says failure to comply with the notice will result in additional charges.
