Hay Webster wants to be JLP's North East St Catherine representative

Aide to the Opposition Leader Sharon Hay Webster has confirmed that she has applied to the Jamaica Labour party (JLP) to be its representative for North East St Catherine constituency.

The seat is currently held by the JLP’s Gregory Mair.

Mair has written to the party leadership accusing Hay Webster of campaigning in the constituency.

Hay Webster joined the JLP after leaving the People’s National Party in 2011.

However, despite applying to represent the party in the constituency, Hay Webster is rejecting Mair's claims.

According to her, she regularly visits the constituency to see her relatives.

Hay Webster says she has not been contacted by the party’s leadership regarding her application which she says was submitted earlier this year.

Meanwhile, it is unlikely that she will be given the go-ahead to represent in the constituency.

JLP General Secretary, Dr Horace Chang says he is not aware of a formal application although the party has discouraged Hay Webster from lobbying for the seat.

According to him, it is not the party’s policy to replace incumbent members of parliament.

Chang is also dismissing speculation that Hay Webster's application is an attempt to sideline persons known to have campaigned against Holness in the 2013 leadership race. 

He says he has had discussions with both individuals with more meetings scheduled. 

This is the latest in a series of internal party issues that have emerged in recent times.
