UWI Mona students concerned about campus security, 'Prestonite' robbed and stabbed

The guild of students at the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI), says it is now very concerned about security on campus following an attack on a student on Monday.

The male student, attached to the AZ Preston Hall, is in hospital after being robbed and stabbed on Monday night at a section of the large campus.

President of the guild of students, Davianne Tucker, says the organisation is very concerned about security and efforts must be taken to address the issues before the new school year starts in September.

She says efforts are now underway to assess the deployment of security personnel across the campus.

The guild president says students need to also ensure that they practice habits that ensure their own security. 

Meanwhile, the police have not reported any breakthrough in the alleged robbery attempt. 

Monday’s incident is the latest violent occurrence on the Mona campus in recent months.

In February, a female student was beaten by a male colleague, who has since been charged.

That incident occurred as the university grappled with claims of widespread gender-based violence at the 67-year-old institution.
