45 per cent of road fatalities occur on weekends

Nearly 45 per cent of the road fatalities recorded this year occurred on weekends.

That’s according to a report by the Road Safety Unit in the Transport Ministry, which shows that 43 persons have been killed on Saturdays and 39 on Sundays.

According to the report, the number of persons killed on Sundays is six more than that for the corresponding period last year while the number of persons killed on Saturdays inched up by three.

Since the start of the year 211 persons have died in 196 fatal crashes.

This is 16 more road fatalities than were recorded for the corresponding period last year, when 195 persons died in 181 fatal crashes.

The report shows that 31 road deaths were recorded on Mondays, 27 on Fridays, 25 on Tuesdays, 24 on Thursdays and 22 on Wednesdays.
