200 workers sent home, JPS disconnects service to Long Pond Sugar Estate

Reports are that Everglades Farm, which also operates Hampden Estate, owes millions of dollars to the utility firm, but has enjoyed several extensions for payment.

Almost 200 workers have been sent home by the management of Everglades Farm in Trelawny after the Jamaica Public Service pulled the plug on the Long Pond Sugar Factory’s connection to the national grid.

Reports are that Everglades Farm, which also operates Hampden Estate, owes millions of dollars to the utility firm, but has enjoyed several extensions for payment.

The company was forced to shutter the factory after the service was disconnected.

According to our source the Hussey Family will be seeking the intervention of the government, with whom they are now in discussions to see how best they can avoid sitting out the 2015/2016 crop year, which was deemed the best option after it was revealed that the future of the facility was under threat.
