Drink company ordered to make interim payment to former worker

Jamaica Beverages Limited has been ordered to make an interim payment to former employee, 46-year-old Janet Edwards, who was shot by gunmen while at work in April 2000.
Supreme Court Judge, Georgiana Fraser made the order.
Edwards, who is being represented by attorneys-at-law Maurice Manning and Arlene Williams, brought a negligence suit against the company on the grounds that it failed to provide adequate security at the workplace.
She is claiming that the company, which is being represented by attorney-at-law Conrad George, is in a volatile area.
In court documents, the woman said she was shot and injured and left paralysed from the neck down following a robbery at the company.
She contends that prior to the attack in 2000 there had been robberies at premises which adjoined the warehouse where she worked and in the surrounding area.
Edwards said workers had expressed fear for their safety.
She obtained a default judgment against the company because it failed to respond to the claim within the specified time.
The company sought to overturn the judgment, but it was unsuccessful.
Damages are expected to be assessed in January 2016.
