Spanish Town gets facelift for Christmas

SPANISH TOWN, St Catherine:
The Old Capital Spanish Town is getting a noticeable facelift. Workers for the last week have been cleaning drains, planting flowers along some of the major thoroughfares in around the town in an effort to fulfil the parish council's objective.
"The council's $18 million Christmas work programme budget is well spent so far, and the emphasis on beautification was in keeping with the objective of the council to beautify Jamaica's former capital," Mayor of Spanish Town Norman Scott told Rural Xpress.
"What you are seeing around St Catherine and the outskirts of Spanish Town is the usual annual Christmas work programme, where each parish council division is given an allocation to carry out Christmas work," Scott stated.
According to the mayor, more beautification is being done.
"Put it this way, improving the aesthetics of your home, your surroundings make you feel much better, and this is why this year we have placed more emphasis on beautification."
The mayor said beautifying the town will encourage people to invest in Spanish Town.
"Beautifying Spanish Town is also important because the town is now attracting more people who see the development going on in Spanish Town and want to be a part of it," Scott noted.
He emphasised that everyone wants to be associated with the development currently under way and this is why there are more participation in the town's affairs.
Scott said the town is resurging as a mayor economic player. He touted the initiative to position the town as a competing tourist attraction pointing out its historical significance.
"The historical significance of Spanish Town makes it even more attractive," he added.
