Five more break out of Spanish Town police lock-up

The recently refurbished lock-up at the Spanish Town Police Station failed its first major test yesterday as five men managed to escape from the facility.

They have been identified as Durvan Coleman, a murder accused of Clarendon; Akram Hall of Newlands, Portmore, who is facing a charge of robbery with aggravation; Jevon Bashford of Big Lane, Central Village, St Catherine, who is charged with illegal possession of firearm; and Andre Adson, a 19-year-old labourer of Spanish Town, who is facing a charge of illegal possession of firearm and ammunition.

CUT THEIR WAY OUT

Police sources says shortly after 3:00 yesterday morning, it was discovered that the men had cut their way out of their cell.

The sources say the lock-up was built to house 60 prisoners, but held nearly 200 and was undermanned by police personnel when the escape occurred.

When our news team visited the police station yesterday, a large police personnel team was being mobilised to begin the search for the escapees while detectives continued their probe into the escape.

Just over one year ago, three prisoners escaped from the Spanish Town police lock-up, prompting the introduction of new security measures before millions of dollars were spent to refurbish the facility.
