Maths teaching improving, says nat'l coordinator

The teaching of mathematics is improving nationwide, National Mathematics Coordinator Dr Tamika Benjamin has said, although the experts at the Ministry of Education still have some areas of concern.
The maths professional and her team, whose unit has been working vigorously to improve the teaching and learning of maths in classrooms since its establishment in 2012, said there have been significant improvements in key aspects in the teaching of the subject, particularly in aligning the subject to students' social contexts.
She highlighted her observations recently during the Mathematics Teacher of the Year Awards Ceremony, sponsored by the Jamaica National Building Society. The event was held at the Jamaica Conference Centre in Kingston.

Godfrey Stewart High School's Oneal McLeod was named Mathematics Teacher of the Year for 2016. He was chosen from a field of five national finalists. The other finalists were Debra Morrison-Muir, first runner-up, from Jessie Ripoll Primary in Kingston; Karen Hartley, Bethabra Primary and Junior High School in Manchester; Nerissa Stephens from Little London Primary in Westmoreland; and Marlon McKenzie from Holy Trinity High in Kingston.
"Despite the limited resources teachers have to work with, many are delivering quality mathematics lessons," Benjamin insisted.
