Jamaicans in Turkey safe - Foreign Affairs Ministry

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it has made contact with four Jamaicans in Turkey and they are safe.

At least 265 people have been reported killed and more than 1,440 others injured following a failed coup attempt in Turkey yesterday.

In a statement this morning, the ministry of foreign affairs said a three-member Jamaican delegation is in Turkey participating in the 40th session of the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO.

However, it says the three women are safe.

In addition, the ministry says there are Jamaicans visiting and studying in Turkey.

It says one person has so far been located and he too is safe.

The foreign ministry says Jamaica’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, which is based in Geneva, is trying to reach out to other Jamaicans in Turkey.

And he ministry says it will continue to monitor the situation.
