McKenzie OK with old Cholera Cemetery development plans
Minister of Local Government, Desmond McKenzie, says he’s satisfied with the decision of the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAC) to approve a private development on the old Cholera Cemetery lands.
The land is located at the intersection of Waterloo and West Kings House Roads in St Andrew.
McKenzie notes that the Municipal Corporation sought and received formal advice from the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) and the Ministry of Health before approving the project.

He says he recently met with the KSAC and all relevant stakeholders, and all matters pertinent to the development were thoroughly discussed.
He says he’s aware of concerns that the fact that cholera victims were buried there more than a century ago presents a health risk for people today.
However, he says the Ministry of Health issued clear written advice as late as last year, indicating that there is no such risk.
