Senator Pearnel Charles Jr.

State minister in the Ministry of National Security, Pearnel Charles Jr, says facilities at the South Camp Rehabilitation Centre are adequate and allow for more effective management and supervision.

One hundred and forty six female inmates who were being  housed at the Fort Augusta Correctional Centre in Portmore, St Catherine, were relocated to the South Camp Rehabilitation Centre in St Andrew last Thursday.

Speaking during a tour of the South Camp Rehabilitation Centre on Friday, Charles, who has portfolio responsibility for the nation’s correctional system, said the facility is  more secure and has been fitted  with modern equipment.

The Ministry of National Security says Fort Augusta is centuries old and is vulnerable to natural disasters because of its location near the sea.

Charles says despite the successful transition, inmates raised a number of concerns, some of which he considers to be valid.

The state minister says he has already had discussions with the leadership of the Department of Correctional Services who have assured him that the issues will be resolved in short order.
