Road Safety Unit developing strategies to save male motorists

The Road Safety Unit in the Transport Ministry says it is developing strategies to stem the number of men dying on the nation’s roadways.

Since the start of the year, 69 persons have died in 66 fatal crashes islandwide.

This represents a 29 per cent decline in road deaths and a 20 per cent decrease in fatal crashes when compared with the corresponding period last year.

However, the Road Safety Unit says men accounted for 87 per cent or 60 of the persons who died in motor vehicle crashes this year.

Director of the Unit Kenute Hare described the figure as worrying and says a number of strategies are coming to arrest this trend.

He is also appealing with male drivers to re-acquaint themselves with the road code.
