Cause of Kingston Craft Market fire still unknown; damage estimated at $12.8m

The Urban Development Corporation (UDC) says the cause of the April fire that damaged a section of the Kingston Craft Market in downtown Kingston is yet to be determined.

The UDC says the Jamaica Fire Brigade, which has been probing the incident, has not been able to determine what caused the fire that destroyed 18 shops.

It says the damage has been estimated at $12.8 million.

Meanwhile, the UDC says it is taking steps to prevent another fire at the Craft Market by installing a fire alarm and detection system.

The Corporation says it is also considering other emergency response systems for the facility.

In the meantime, the UDC says work is advancing on the Red Rose Fish Market at the corner of Rose Lane and Heywood Street in downtown Kingston.

It says a framed structure, as well as stalls and fish storage area are being built for the fish market at a cost $43 million.
