Thirty-seven persons died in motor vehicle crashes last month, the highest figure recorded for a single month this year.

According to statistics compiled by the Road Safety Unit (RSU) in the transport ministry, this is seven more than the number of fatalities recorded in May last year.

The data show that March recorded the second highest number of road deaths this year, with 31 followed by January at 30.

Despite this, the number of persons killed on the nation’s roadways this year is 14 per cent less than the number recorded for the corresponding period last year.

Since the start of the year the RSU says 160 persons have died in 148 fatal crashes.
