Linstead CDC Setting the Trend In Community Outreach

LINSTEAD, St Catherine:
The Linstead Community Development Committee (CDC) with its agenda set on fulfilling its mission of community outreach has embarked on its 12th staging of its annual summer school.
Chairman of the CDC Devon Smith told Rural Xpress that the volunteer teachers are students from high schools.
"What is exciting about this year is, the volunteers are students from the area who were once summer school attendees and are excelling in their classes," said Smith.
Continuing he said: "One important feature of the curriculum this year is the move to emphasise cultural activities, nature walks, art and craft and community tours with a view to promoting Jamaica 55 and its theme."
According to Smith, another area where the CDC has shown its consistent community outreach mantle is the continuation of the programme, 'Operation Clean Sweep', an initiative sponsored by USAID to promote environmental awareness.
"We came out on top having attained first place in the programme that emphasises the recycling of plastic bottles. We saw the need to continue because of its value to the environment," Smith told Rural Xpress.
Already, 12 students are participating in the summer programme, and according to Smith, that will change over the coming week with the addition of 25 more students.
Demarce Williams, third form student at Kingston College, Saskia Brown Charlemont High School fourth form student and Queen's High School's Sylvia Cooper are the three volunteer teachers who will be the facilitators for the programme.
"In addition, there will be various resources persons coming in from different groups, including the police to deal with safety and security issues," the CDC chairman stated.
