The National Parent-Teachers' Association of Jamaica (NPTAJ) is describing plans for the phased introduction of a rural school transport system as a step in the right direction.

In a release this morning, the NPTAJ said it looks forward to the roll out of a school transport system for the entire island as it will positively impact the 20 per cent absenteeism being seen in schools across Jamaica.

In commending the government on the planned roll out of the pilot, the group says the country needs a National School Bus Transport System.

Education and Information Minister, Senator Ruel Reid, announced Wednesday that the government will be spending $200 million this year on the pilot to provide transportation to needy students in rural Jamaica.

Senator Reid had previously said the pilot would begin at the start of the new academic year.

He said on Wednesday that it would cover eight parishes.
