Prime Minister Andrew Holness has hit back at criticisms from Leader of the Opposition Dr Peter Phillips who took the Government to task over the state of the economy.

In his first address as president of the opposition People’s National Party at its annual conference yesterday, Phillips charged that the labour party government has been ineffective.

Phillips also said the government has placed greater social and economic burdens on Jamaicans as a result of two massive tax packages.

However, Prime Minister Holness said Phillips is misinformed adding that he should be constructive in his criticisms.

Addressing JLP supporters at a party meeting in Old Harbour, St Catherine last night, he indicated that the government has embarked on a strong economic programme to grow the economy.

Prime Minister Holness said this has already borne fruit as seen in the 35,000 new jobs added to the labour market this year.

He also cited the passing of performance tests under the standby agreement with the International Monetary Fund.
