British woman fined $1.65m, sentenced to 18 months for smuggling cocaine

A British woman who pleaded guilty to breaching the Dangerous Drugs Act was fined $1.65 million and sentenced to 18 months at hard labour.

Thirty six-year-old Amanda George pleaded guilty in the St James Parish Court on Wednesday.

George was fined $800,000 on the charge of Possession of Cocaine and $850,000 for Attempting to Export Cocaine. She will serve six months in prison on each fine if unable to pay.

George was also sentenced to 18 months at hard labour.

The police report that on Sunday, October 8, George was arrested at the Sangster International Airport when detectives from the Narcotics Division found cocaine weighing approximately 3.1 kilogrammes in a false compartment of her suitcase as she attempted to board a flight destined for Birmingham, England.
