The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP's) Dean Jones has resigned as the chairman of the Yallahs Division in St Thomas on the eve of Nomination Day and says he will not be contesting the April 27 by-election.

Jones confirmed a short while ago that he has stepped aside but declined to provide any further detail.

He also said he will not be participating in tomorrow's nomination day activities ahead of the by-election for a new councillor for Yallahs.

Last month, Jones was disqualified as the Yallahs councillor after Justice Bryan Sykes found that he was a civil servant at the time of the November 2016 Local Government elections in which he defeated the People's National Party (PNP's) Constantine Bogle.

The Representation of the People Act prohibits government employees from contesting local government elections.

The JLP had announced that Jones would contest the seat in the upcoming by-elections against Bogle.

The candidates will be nominated between the hours of noon and 2 p.m tomorrow at the Yallahs Baptist Church Hall.

The PNP candidate is expected to be nominated first followed by any independent candidates and then the JLP candidate.
