Passengers on Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) buses will later this year be able to access Digicel's superfast LTE through a partnership which sees Growth Tech Limited, providers of the service, striking a deal with Digicel business.

Both entities have inked a deal, making Digicel the preferred technology partner based on its superfast LTE network. Through its Digicel Business arm, the technology will be installed in approximately 450 buses, beginning with a pilot programme in June 2018.

"Our partnership with Digicel Business further cements our plan to deliver connectivity of the highest quality. Providing the Wi-Fi service on JUTC buses via a fast, reliable LTE network will help many commuters to do more while on the go," said Neil Lawrence, CEO of Growth Tech.

"Through this multimillion- dollar partnership, not only will Growth Tech move further towards it's mandate of making Internet connectivity the reality for more Jamaicans, but we will bring them Digicel's reliability and speed through superfast LTE," he continued

Public Wi-Fi by bus is one of the features of 'smart cities' and digitally connected societies. The Growth Tech/Digicel partnership signals a major leap towards Jamaica becoming the Caribbean's first digital society, and Kingston a smart city.

In his remarks, General Manager of Digicel Business Brian Bennett-Easy said the agreement signifies Digicel's intent to use all technological means to increase Jamaica's rate of internet penetration by making the Internet available to more people in more places.

"Our roll-out of Jamaica's first and fastest LTE mobile data network puts Digicel at a unique advantage to continue developing on the technology to deliver the internet to customers in more ways," said Bennet-Easy.

He continued, "As the go-to place for all things data, Digicel will use its proven expertise to support a smooth connectivity experience for commuters to keep up with the latest on social media or send an email ahead of arriving to work."

Digicel Business enters the agreement with Growth Tech with a proven track record for delivering world-class solutions and services that create transformational outcomes and experiences for customers.

Growth Tech Limited, Jamaica's newest technological company, continues to make monumental moves to bring internet connectivity to public passenger vehicles via Wi-Fi, cementing two deals earlier this year with the JUTC and JUTA.
