Ronaldo agrees to suspended prison sentence, fine in tax evasion case - report
Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly agreed to accept a fine of 18.8 million Euros and a suspended prison term to settle tax evasion charges in Spain.
The Real Madrid and Portugal footballer, 33, was accused last year of defrauding tax authorities of 14.8 million Euros.
He has denied the charges.
The report became public yesterday, minutes before Ronaldo scored a hat-trick to earn Portugal a draw against Spain in their first match at the FIFA World Cup now taking place in Russia.
The El Mundo newspaper reported that in June last year Ronaldo offered to pay Spanish authorities close to 14 million Euros, but the offer was rejected.
Spanish courts have recently begun a crackdown on tax evasion among footballers.
The deal has not yet been signed off on, but experts say it is unlikely Ronaldo will serve any jail time under the deal.
