LASCO Curves celebrates nine top-performing female GSAT students

Nine brilliant girls from schools across the island were recognised by LASCO Curves for their outstanding achievement in this year's Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) at a special ceremony, held at LASCO Distributors Limited, White Marl, St Catherine.

The scholarships represent the cost for each girl to attend high school and amounted to $430,000 this year.

The awardees were chosen from the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information's six regions and also featured a special award for a top-performing female child of a LASCO employee and two top-performing female students selected by the LASCO MoEYI Principal and Teacher of the Year awardees.

Renee Rose, brand manager for LASCO Curves, the company's line of sanitary napkins, was elated to see yet another set of exceptional young ladies granted the opportunity to succeed.

"It warms my heart that our brand can make this positive contribution to the lives of these young ladies. Each cohort drives us to do more so we are able to contribute more, and this year we were able to move from six scholarships to nine," Rose said.

"We have been delivering on our promise to encourage girls to be the woman they dream of becoming for the past five years through this scholarship; the past two years with the We Inspire Girls Tour and with a strong leader like chairman [Hon Lascelles Chin], who has surrounded himself with a host of outstanding women in mid, senior and top-level management, there is no doubt you will see more from us in the near future, "she added.

The celebration continued with a powerful charge brought to the students by Mikhalia Thomas, a senior student of Campion College and 2014 Curves Scholarship recipient, who reminisced on her experience with the Curves Scholarship.

"Just the other day I was in your position, getting this award that was very helpful to me. It was a great avenue for my family and in making sure I was ready for school [on the] September morning 2014," Thomas recounted.

Thomas went on to give crucial tips for staying focused and successful in high school. She passionately appealed to the young ladies to continue the hard work and resist the negative temptations that will undoubtedly arise during their journey.
