Western Bureau:

Residents of Rosemount, in St James, were left bewildered this morning when they woke up to the shocking news of the murder of a mother and her daughter and the subsequent suicide by the woman’s common-law husband, who killed himself by driving a car into the Rio Cobre River, in St Catherine.

The woman, who was stabbed multiple times, has been identified as 45-year-old Deon Smith, a service station supervisor.  Her daughter, whose throat was slashed as she slept, is 16-year-old Jayshenel Gordon, a student of Herbert Morrison Technical High School.

The accused killer, who is believed to be in his late 30s, has been identified as Fabian Lyewsang. Lyewsang’s 13 year old son, who he took away from the scene when he fled the scene, has not been located.

“It is a cruel act,” said Hopeton McPherson, the uncle of the slain woman. “I know this man (Lyewsang) for quite a while and although he did not talk a lot, I never expected anything like this from him.”

However, based on residents of the community, which is located some five minutes from downtown Montego Bay, the killing may have been sparked by jealousy as according to them, Lyewsang has been complaining to his friends that Smith was being unfaithful to him.

“Him always a seh she a gi him bun but me neva know seh him woulda tek it to such a level,” a resident told the Gleaner. “And, because him a nuh de talkative type, you couldn’t really know wha a gwaan inna him head. But, it is a wicked act, especially fe cut de likkle girl throat.”

Interesting, it would appear that Lyewsang was also unfaithful because his son, who is now missing, was born to another woman during his relationship with Smith.

“Him go out go get pickney and de woman neva left him or kill him and now look wha him do, bout him a get bun,” said a furious female resident. “Why him kill himself? …him shoulda stand up and face justice…him is a wutliss coward.”

According to reports, about 2:15 a.m, Lyewsang and Smith got into a heated quarrel at their Rosemount home. During the argument, Smith was attacked with a knife and stabbed multiple times all over her body. Lyewsang later went upstairs to Gordon’s room and slashed her throat.

After the double killing, Lyewsang is said to have woke up his son, who had apparently been sleeping during the commotion, and they fled the location in Smith’s Nissan Tida motorcar, which he subsequently drove into the Rio Cobre River, resulting in his death.

His son remains missing.
