Texaco launches LPG Autogas

Petroleum marketing company Texaco this morning launched its liquid petroleum gas (LPG) product called, Autogas, which will see a significant slash in the cost of fuel for motorists who convert their vehicles, according to CEO of GB Energy Texaco Jamaica, Mauricio Pulido.

Speaking at the launch held at the first Texaco station to offer the petrol alternative, located at 27 Half Way Tree Road in St Andrew, Pulido said the use of LPG will benefit motorists as well as the environment.

“LPG is a cleaner fuel than traditional gasoline and it burns more efficiently in the motor producing less contamination. You see, LPG for cars reduces CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions by 25 per cent when compared to gasoline (which), as of today, could be sold cheaper than regular gasoline at the pump,” Pulido said.

Texaco has been working on the project for the past eight months.

Drivers will have to convert their vehicles to access the LPG, costing between just under $200,000 and $250,000 depending on the size of the vehicle.

GB Energy has partnered with Jamaican start-up Tecnigas to convert vehicles.

The company said that it will be selling LPG at between 40-50 per cent cheaper than 90-Octane fuel.

Pulido noted that by converting to LPG, motorist can go the same distance at half the price.

The GB Energy CEO said the feedback from motorists who have converted has been favourable.

“The response from motorists has been great. We have converted close to 15 cars. Drivers enjoy the transition from LPG to gasoline and from gasoline to LPG by pressing a button in the dashboard,” he said.
