CBU shocked at the murder of former talk show host
The Caribbean Broadcasting Union (CBU) says it is shocked at the killing of former talk show host Trinidadian, Ricardo Welch, also known as the “Gladiator”, who was attacked and shot to death last week in the twin-island republic.
Noting that the Caribbean region has had a good track record of media workers being safe, the CBU said it hopes the authorities will leave no stone unturned in bringing the perpetrators of the crime to justice.
The CBU expressed sympathies to Welch’s family and former colleagues in the media.
The union noted that the media worker killing in Trinidad and Tobago comes at a time when the CBU also joined others globally who are shocked by the reported killing of Washington Post writer and exiled Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
The CBU calls for media workers not to let down their guard with their personal safety, even as it calls for its member broadcasters and newspapers to note the seriousness of the times and take steps to help journalists to have better security.
“We ask our national security and justice officials in the region to pay close attention to these troubling developments and to take whatever steps they can to better protect our citizens”, a CBU statement said.
