The police are warning firearm holders against illegal gun salutes to celebrate the New Year.

In a release Monday afternoon, the police said they will be vigilant in the communities, business centres and other areas where New Year's activities will be held.

"Licensed firearm holders are reminded to be responsible and to desist from partaking in celebratory gunfire and salutes during the New Year celebrations," said a police spokesperson.

The police are also reminding promoters that the necessary permission must be granted by the divisional commander for the staging of events.
