Earth Today | 17 islands benefit from resilience workshop

THIRTY-FIVE participants from 17 Caribbean islands recently benefited from a regional workshop to help policymakers and statisticians strengthen and streamline their poverty-assessment tools, and have more evidence-based data to build their climate resilience.

The workshop was hosted by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB).

"We want to make more of our policies evidence-based," noted Matthew Straub, chairman of the Community Disaster Risk Reduction Trust Fund Steering Committee and first secretary (development) at the Canadian High Commission in Barbados.

"This Enhanced Country Poverty Assessment aims to do that ... . It will help us improve the engagement of Canada and other development partners," he added.

Straub was addressing participants at the workshop.

He encouraged them to take the information shared from the workshop back to their countries and to put it to good use.

The workshop formed part of activities under the Community Disaster Risk Reduction Fund of the CDB, aimed at building the countries' long-term resilience to disasters and climate change.
