The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is probing the accidental shooting of a policeman during an early morning operation that went terribly wrong at the Olivier Housing Scheme in Buff Bay, Portland.

The unidentified policeman is said to be in critical condition at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH), after being transferred from the Annotto Bay hospital this morning with a gunshot wound to the head.

A preliminary report said the unidentified policeman, who is a constable, was part of the Operations Support Team that went in search of wanted men who were reportedly occupying a house at the Olivier Housing Scheme.

It's reported that the injured constable went inside the house and was in the process of opening a side door to the house when an explosion was heard.

Other members of the team, who rushed to investigate after hearing their colleague cry out, found him lying on the floor inside the dwelling covered in blood.

He was rushed to the Annotto Bay hospital, following which he was transferred to the KPH in a critical state.

INDECOM and the Inspectorate of Constabulary have launched investigations into the incident.
