Montego Bay Harbour Beach Park project to start today
Western Bureau:
Montego Bay’s mayor, Councillor Homer Davis, who is also chairman of the St James Municipal Corporation, says construction of the much-anticipated closed Harbour Beach Park project on Montego Bay’s waterfront will commence today.
“Starting Monday (May 6), the closed Harbour Beach will commence construction,” said Davis, who was speaking at Thursday night’s inaugural public forum, ‘Your Mayor Speaks, which was staged in Sam Sharpe Square, Montego Bay.
PROJECT’S DURATION
“Information from the contractor is that the project will take some 18 months to be completed, so Monday, you will see activities starting out by what we popularly call ‘Dump Up beach,’ said Davis, in reference to the project, which had its groundbreaking earlier this year.
“That project is designed for the people of Montego Bay and St. James, those of our visiting friends who are coming from other sections of Jamaica, and those visiting from other countries. it Is there for them to enjoy also,” said Davis.
FUNDING
The development of the Harbour Beach Park is primarily being funded by the Tourism Enhancement Fund and is being executed by the Urban Development Corporation (UDC). It has been described as one of the single largest transformative projects for the parish.
The project forms a part of the UDC’s Montego Bay redevelopment programme, which will see the conversion of the 16-acre property into recreational space with amenities that will allow for it to operate as a free-access, licensed public beach.
The Your Mayor Speak forum is a one-hour interaction between the Montego Bay mayor and the citizens in St James. It serves the dual purpose of giving residents a chance to ask questions about development and other government services, and allow for the mayor to provide updates on projects.
