Residents turned in large numbers today to construct a wheelchair access ramp at the Cornwall Mountain Health Centre, the municipal project for National Labour Day.

The facility's aesthetics were also improved with the cutting of the lawn. Walls and railings were painted by the contestants in the Miss Westmoreland Festival Queen Jamaica Cultural Development Commission contest.

Danree Delancy, mayor of the capital of Savanna-la-Mar, expressed delight in this  year's Labour Day theme of 'ramp up di access… show you care'.

“The  councillor (for the Cornwall Mountain Division) after consultation with members of the community decided that the best place for this project this year would be at the Cornwall Mountain Health Centre, hence here we are putting in a wheelchair access ramp also given the general facility a face lift, in terms of having cut the ground and doing some paintings,” Delancy told The Gleaner.

Claudia Wilson, the administrator of the Westmoreland Health Services  expressed gratitude for the support.

“We welcome.the initiative to construct a ramp at the Cornwall Mountains and I am sure the persons who are physically challenged will be happy with this initiative,” she said. “It's good to see that the community is out giving their support, because the community has to own these facilities that are serving them."
