Keeping your child safe in a tech-filled World: A guide for Jamaican parents
THE MONTH of May is dedicated to celebrating our nation’s youths, highlighting their achievements and the areas where we can help them grow. One crucial focus is the integration of digital technology in their lives.
From educational gadgets like computers, laptops, and tablets to fun devices, such as smartphones, smartwatches, headphones, cameras, and toys, technology plays a significant role in the lives of today’s youths. While these gadgets and apps offer many benefits, they also come with risks that both parents and children need to understand.
“As a parent myself, I’ve seen how children today, often referred to as ‘digital natives’, are not always aware of the virtual dangers they face. It’s crucial for parents to recognise that these Internet-connected devices can open the door to cybercriminals,” said Ronald Donaldson, major account manager for Fortinet Jamaica.
COMMON CYBER THREATS
Children are particularly vulnerable to digital scams and mobile-based attacks designed to trick them into revealling personal information, such as banking details and other sensitive data. With human error or carelessness accounting for 95 per cent of all security breaches, it’s essential for everyone to act as the first line of defence.
Here’s how to be a tech-savvy parent and keep your child safe online:
1. Discuss online privacy: Educate your children about the importance of keeping personal information private. This includes details like their name, date of birth, and, for older children, banking information. Make sure they understand they should never share account details online, except with verified representatives and under your supervision.
2. Create an online rulebook: It’s tough to control everything kids do online, but rules help! List specific websites and apps that are safe for them to use, which helps you monitor their activity. Set guidelines for social media, specifying what they can share and who they can connect with.
3. Security matters: Learn about the security features of websites and apps your children use. Add extra security layers to their devices like strong passwords for each account (no birthdays or common phrases!). Teach them to be careful with public Wi-Fi – always confirm the network name with a grown-up before logging in.
4. Keep an eye out: Even with secure accounts, keep an eye on your child’s online activity. Maybe keep the computer in a central location where you can intervene if necessary. For older children, supervise their online purchases to ensure they use secure websites, as e-commerce scams are on the rise.
BALANCING OPPORTUNITIES AND SAFETY
Internet-connected devices are integral to many aspects of a child’s life today, including education and social interactions. While these devices offer immense opportunities for growth and development, they also expose children to cyber threats. As the Internet becomes a fundamental tool in our children’s lives, protecting them online is a necessity for all parents.
By following these tips, you can help ensure that your children enjoy the benefits of technology safely and securely.
