Jessie Ripoll Primary principal and wife die in US crash
The Jessie Ripoll Primary School is mourning the loss of its principal, O'neil Stevens, and his wife, Camesha Lindsay-Stevens, who died in a motor vehicle crash on a highway in the United States on Friday.
The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Kingston Kenneth Richards has expressed sadness. "A very unnerving and tragic news of the unfortunate demise of Stevens and his wife and then with his children right there to see," he said, noting that the church is moving to support the staff and students. One of his two daughters was a student at the school.
The Kingston-based Jessie Ripoll is a Roman Catholic institution.
Official details on the crash are limited but Richards said based on preliminary reports he has received, the incident happened on a highway while the Stevens were reportedly responding to a problem with their vehicle.
"The car was giving problem and they stopped on the highway, pulled off to the side. The wife came out after her husband came out, and a car just ran into them," he said, noting that the family was preparing to head back home.
"Every time think about it, it unnerves me to think that such tragedy could take place," Richards added.
Vice Principal Marsha Moodie-Benbow informed the school community.
"Stevens was more than an exemplary leader; he was a beacon of inspiration, and dedication," said Moodie-Benbow in a message. "His vision for excellence in education and his unwavering commitment to the holistic development of our students left an indelible mark on our school community. Alongside him, Stevens was a supportive partner and a cherished presence in our extended school family, always contributing with grace and generosity."
The senior school leader said the education ministry will provide counselling support to help members of the school community cope with the loss.
Moodie-Benbow urged everyone to "keep their daughters and the family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers during this period of unimaginable grief".
The resumption of classes initially set for Monday, has been pushed back to Tuesday, January 7.
