The Meteorological Service of Jamaica says Hurricane Beryl is about to begin moving away from the island.

However, it says a hurricane warning is still in effect as Beryl remains close to the southwestern tip of Jamaica.

At 7 p.m. the centre of Hurricane Beryl was located 115 kilometres south-southeast of Negril Point.

Hurricane force winds extend up to 75 kilometres from the centre and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 295 kilometres.

Rainfall associated with Beryl is expected to continue across sections of mainly central and western parishes and may be accompanied by strong, gusty winds as the eye moves away from the island.

The Met Service says rising water levels will continue to affect coastal areas of southwestern parishes while Beryl remains in the vicinity. Small craft operators are urged to remain in port until sea conditions return to normal.
