PORT ANTONIO, Portland:

Portland businessman Telief ‘Peter’ Hall is offering 35 students on summer break the opportunity to work at his business place, Roots 21, a fine-dining restaurant located along West Palm Avenue in Port Antonio, Porland.

Hall told The Gleaner on Sunday that the initial plan was to offer employment to 25 students, but that it was later increased to 35 due to the need, following the passage of Hurricane Beryl on July 3.

He said that he is convinced that he made the right decision, as some parents might not be able to fully absorb the back-to-school expenses for the 2024-2025 academic year.

“The people of Portland have supported my place of business daily. And since they allow me to make money, it is only fair that I give back a portion to those that will help to build, reshape, and lead our country,” said Hall.

He added: “Students are going to be our future leaders and, therefore, it is best to keep them in school so that they can secure a well-rounded education. ... This is an opportunity for them to earn cash, which could assist with the purchase of books, uniform, and assist with the payment of school fees.”

The businessman said he is anticipating that all 35 slots will be filled early this week as he launches the summer employment programme.

“They will earn while learning skills in meal preparation, food presentation, waiter service, and just the basic hospitality aspect as it relates to tourism,” he added.
