Two cops were this morning shot while on an operation in West Prospect, St Catherine to apprehend one of the parish's most wanted criminals.

Two gunmen, identified as Peter Davis, otherwise known as 'Devil', and Tavani Benjamin, were fatally shot in the firefight.

Davis was identified as one of St Catherine's top five most wanted men, while Benjamin named as a person of interest by the police in a case of murder.

The operation also led to the recovery of three firearms.

It is reported that the police, acting on intelligence, went to the area on an operation about 5:15 a.m when a fierce gunfight ensued, resulting in both officers sustaining non-life-threatening injuries.

The police say the gunmen attempted to escape in the community and were intercepted by other members of the team when they were shot.

Davis, who the police was linked to five murders, and Benjamin were wounded and later pronounced dead at hospital.

The police's Inspectorate and Professional Standards Oversight Bureau and the Independent Commission of Investigations are conducting separate probes into the incident.
