Minister of Sport Olivia Grange has expressed condolence at the death of Jamaican Olympian George Rhoden.

Rhoden died on Saturday. He was 92 years old.

“It's so sad that Vincent George Rhoden, the last of the celebrated quartet that won the gold medal for Jamaica in the mile relay at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952 has left us,” Grange said in a media release.

Minister Grange recalled that the feat was achieved after their disappointment in the London Olympics in 1948 when Arthur Wint pulled up in the race.

She said of note also is the fact that before the relay Rhoden had beaten his close friend, Herb McKenley, to win the gold medal in the 400 metres.

“And the superlative performance of the team in Helsinki followed Rhoden setting a new world record 400-metres in a time of 45:80 seconds at a meet in Sweden in 1950.

“There is no doubt that Vincent George Rhoden played his part in paving the way for future generations of Jamaican track athletes, who have certainly not let him down," Grange added.

Meanwhile, Opposition Spokesperson on Sports, Wavell Hinds, has expressed profound sorrow at Rhoden's death.

“George Rhoden's impact on Jamaican athletics cannot be overstated,” said Hinds. “He was a trailblazer, achieving greatness at a time when opportunities for athletes from small nations like ours were limited. His victories in the 400 meters and the 4x400 meters relay at the 1952 Olympics solidified Jamaica's place on the world's athletic stage, and his legacy continues to influence and inspire our young athletes today.”

He said the People's National Party extends its deepest condolences to Rhoden's family, friends, and the entire Jamaican sporting community.

“As we mourn the loss of a true icon, let us also take this moment to honour and celebrate a life that has left an indelible mark on our nation. George Rhoden's legacy will continue to inspire future generations, reminding us all of the heights we can reach through hard work, dedication, and an unyielding spirit.”
