MBJ Airports Limited, the operator of Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St James, says the airport's runway undergoes regular maintenance and sought to assure the public that it is safe.

The declaration came after the runway was temporarily closed on Sunday after suffering what was described as “minor damage”.

This resulted in the cancellation of some flights while other flights were diverted to Kingston.

This was the similar case earlier this month when the runway was closed over construction issues, forcing the cancellation of flights and delaying many others.

Addressing concerns, MBJ, in a media release today, stated that as per standard operating procedures, regular assessment is carried out on all components on schedule, however, unforeseen issues may occur.

It noted that there are currently no operational issues at Sangster impacting the safety of the runway or any other major infrastructure.

“MBJ has always been committed to maintaining high standards of security and safety in its operations which includes stringent maintenance and safety protocols, especially as it relates to the runway.”

It pointed out that major work has been carried out on the runway over the years including a runway rehabilitation project which was completed in 2013.

The airport added that in 2018, $26 million was invested to resurface the taxiways, shoulder and ramps and that between 2021 and 2023 US$70 million was expended on the Runway Extension and Associated Works project.

According to MBJ, the runway at Sangster is compliant with not only the local authorities but also meets the highest international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization.

“In situations requiring assessment, MBJ may briefly suspend activities as a precautionary measure and implement all necessary safeguards to facilitate a prompt and safe resumption of services, as demonstrated during the incident on Sunday, August 25, 2024.”

MBJ says ensuring the safety and well-being of passengers and staff remains its utmost priority.
