A St Catherine woman who pleaded guilty to cruelty to a child was on Wednesday handed a two-year suspended sentence in the parish court.

Presiding judge Yvette Wenthworth-Miller also imposed six months of parental supervision on the 49-year-old.

Attorney-at-law Rodain Richardson made an impassioned plea for a non-custodial sentence for his client.

He told the court that his client acted in a state of anger but is remorseful about her action.

He also noted that she did not waste the court's time in that she pleaded guilty to the charge.

The judge then decided on a non-custodial sentence.

The court was told in February 2024 the woman assaulted her 14-year-old stepdaughter and locked her out of their house.

A report was made to the Spanish Town police and she was arrested and subsequently charged.
