Mandeville mayor hails Skeng Don for PNP victory in local polls

The People's National Party's Donovan Mitchell has praised well-known party activist Skeng Don, whom he said came out of retirement to help the party win all four divisions in the Central Manchester constituency in February's parish polls. 

"A waah big up Skeng Don," he declared to an approving National Arena, in reference to the businessman, whose given name is Kenneth Black.

Mitchell was delivering an address on behalf of the party's mayors and councillors. He is the chairman of the Manchester Municipal Corporation and mayor of Mandeville. 

The party retained its three divisions in Manchester Central and took the only one held by the ruling Jamaica Labour Party, handing a blow to MP Rhoda Moy Crawford.

Mitchell labelled it "4-nil". 

He went on to attack the Holness administration, accusing it of not giving sufficient attention to local government issues, such as garbage collection, parochial roads and water. 

He said despite several major road projects announced, councillors have seen little coming their way. 

Meanwhile, platforms speakers continue to hammer the Andrew Holness administration over the high cost of living. 

Vice president and Manchester North Western MP Mikael Phillips argued that Jamaicans "are living on the edge".

He rejected claims that there is no policy difference between his opposition party and the JLP.

He said the PNP is different and "will never ever" be like the JLP. He urged the party supporters to pay attention to proposals that he said will give Jamaica "first class" education, health and transportation systems.
