Discovery Bauxite employees used the opportunity presented by National Tree Planting Day on October 4 to plant several trees at the company’s sports club in Discovery Bay, including a palm tree in memory of their late colleague Paul ‘Pretty’ Williams, who died unexpectedly on June 13. The bauxite company in St Ann has planted over 175,000 trees in direct support of the prime minister’s National Tree Planting Programme, in addition to thousands of trees that are planted as part of the bauxite industry’s long-established programme of reforestation and land restoration after mining, intended to improve the ecology and sustainability of arable lands under their care. Alvin Gallimore (third left), club groundsman, plants the memorial palm tree, while other staff members look on.
