Solar lights will be installed in more than 30 communities across St Andrew West Rural.

This was disclosed by Minister of State in the Ministry of National Security and Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency, Juliet Cuthbert-Flynn, during her contribution to the 2024/25 State of the Constituency Debate in the House of Representatives on Wednesday.

Cuthbert-Flynn shared that the 'Light Up Community Project' is being funded under the Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo) 'Spruce Up Pon De Corner' Programme.

“Many communities are in darkness. The children, the elderly and the disabled have to use their phones or a flashlight to get home some evenings. This will be a $4-million project. Thanks to Minister [of Tourism, Edmund] Bartlett for this annual allocation as we brighten communities and make them safer,” she said.

This year, $250 million was allocated for spruce-up activities in all 63 constituencies.

'Spruce Up Pon De Corner' forms part of the Government's vision to transform urban spaces and revitalise constituencies.

Meanwhile, Cuthbert-Flynn pointed out that there are many informal communities without proper walkways or road surfaces.

Consequently, residents of Rose Hill will benefit from a $2-million concrete road in the coming months, which will be financed through the Constituency Development Fund.

“This will greatly benefit the members, especially the elderly and children,” Cuthbert-Flynn pointed out.

Additionally, she said farm roads in Pleasant Spring in Lawrence Tavern are now being upgraded, while those serving Mount Olive and Lime Edge will be rehabilitated later this year.
