The St Ann Chamber of Commerce is calling for all relevant sectors to support its plan to revitalise the resort town of Ocho Rios, citing its importance to Jamaica’s economy.

Chamber President Dr Ransford Davidson said recently that the Chamber was calling for groups such as the National Works Agency, the National Environment and Planning Agency, the Tourism Enhancement Fund, the Tourism Product Development Company, the Urban Development Corporation and its subsidiary the St Ann Development Company, the National Water Commission, the Jamaica Constabulary Force, Jamaica Bauxite Mining, the Jamaica Labour Party, the People’s National Party, and the Port Authority of Jamaica to “urgently support and endorse the execution and implementation of this forward-thinking plan”.

According to Davidson, Ocho Rios remains a vital cog in the advancement of Jamaica’s overall economy, particularly through foreign direct investment inflows and the tourism sector. Hence, a comprehensive plan to revitalise the town must now be treated with urgency.

“The plan aims to transform the region through targeted investments in infrastructure, tourism, and community development, led by local authorities, urban planners, and engaged citizens, and aims to reposition Ocho Rios as a premier destination that meets the needs of residents and both local and foreign visitors,” Davidson stated.

The Chamber president identified four key areas to focus on. These are to expand port capacity to accommodate more cruise ships, enhance the road network to improve traffic flow, revitalise the iconic waterfront to create a vibrant public space, and rejuvenate the historic Ocho Rios Market to support local businesses and cultural heritage.

“By addressing these critical areas, the plan’s aims to drive economic growth, strengthen the tourism industry, and ultimately, improve the overall quality of life for those living in and visiting Ocho Rios and the wider St Ann parish will be realised,” he suggested.

Davidson told The Gleaner on Wednesday that given the support, the Chamber would be ready to begin working on the revitalisation plan immediately.

Over the years, members of the public have complained about the untidy state of Ocho Rios, among other issues that include traffic congestion and sidewalk vending.
