The Desnoes & Geddes (D&G) Foundation’s Learning for Life initiative recently brought its mission to ‘Impact lives and enrich communities’ to the Mandeville Craft Institute, hosting a spirited cocktail mix-off for students in HEART/NSTA Trust’s mixology cohort. This hands-on competition was a display of flair, finesse and a practical exercise designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and the demands of the hospitality industry.

Under the watchful eyes of expert judges, participants impressed with their creativity and professionalism, as they were evaluated on criteria such as mixing techniques, showmanship, attire, drink presentation, and flavour. From the confident smiles to the clinking of shaker tins, every moment spoke to the transformative power of skill-based education.

“For these students to enter the professional setting as mixologists or bartenders, they need to have the know-how – the practical skills required to thrive in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment like a formal bar setting where several consumers are placing orders simultaneously. This kind of hands-on training is essential to equip them with the expertise to manage time effectively, maintain quality, and meet the demands of every customer with confidence and precision,” says HEART/NSTA Trust mixology course instructor Peta-Gaye Tain.

The foundation’s Learning for Life Programme continues to invest in the dreams of Jamaica’s next generation, fostering empowerment, confidence, and readiness for the real world.
