Loving the skin you're in

Published:Tuesday | October 3, 2017 | 12:00 AMNatalia Oh

In a guarded world, it is refreshing to meet someone who is cheerful and pleasant. More and more it becomes clear to me, how important a first impression is — meeting Souniqua Davis for the first time, she was assisting on a project I was working on, and I was impressed by how easy going and adaptable she was. Cracking jokes, she was a welcome comic relief for what was a somewhat stressful project. I wondered what it was about her outlook on life which contributed to making her who she is today.

Today we speak to the 19 year old Bajan who has made Jamaica her home for the past two years, to find out what makes her love the skin she's in.

What are you currently studying?

Physical Therapy

Where do you get your confidence from?

That’s a great question.  I would love to say that my confidence comes from me, but I can’t take credit for it. Growing up, I admired my older sister -her beauty and strength. She showered me with love and positive reinforcements and helped me to create a wholesome relationship with myself.

What do you love most about yourself?

I love everything about myself from the swing of my hips to the curve of my smile. But I think what I love most is the fact that I don’t take myself too seriously. I’m able to enjoy each moment as it comes, and I never take anything for granted.

What do you do really, really well?

I think I speak really well. I do a lot of public speaking and I interact with others very well.

What would you like to learn to do very well?  What can you do today to begin?

Well, I love my field of study and if I can master it then a lot of people would be able to benefit from that. I can study more.

What gets you truly excited about life?

The fact that its fleeting makes every second an adventure — a story to be told. There are so many possibilities waiting to happen. Its amazing to be a part of it

How do you define your purpose in life?

I believe my purpose in life is to help other people. I always put the needs of others before mine, and I want to be in a position to make an impact in someone’s life.

When was the last time you did something for the very first time?

Last year I learnt to drive.

What are your top five values?  Are you living them every day?

Spirit of adventure, Good humour, Honesty, Open-mindedness and Passion. Yes I am, whole heartedly

What would you do differently if you knew nobody would judge you?

I feel like I dance to the beat of my own drum. There is nothing I would do differently.

What do you imagine yourself doing 1 year, 5 years, and 10 years from now?

In one year I will be in my final year of University. In five I will be financially stable with a closet filled with wigs, and a large unnecessary collection of make-up. In 10 years, I’ll probably be living in one of five homes in a European country with my husband, twin girls and a baby boy with four rescue dogs.

What will your success look like?

My success will be happiness in its purest form.

Right now, at this very moment, what do you want most? What are you going to do about it?

I want independence. As a university student, I’m in this loop of being dependently independent and it sucks. I’m going to finish this degree with first class honours.

What is the biggest obstacle that stands in the way of your happiness?

I think I’m my biggest obstacle. Happiness comes from within and is 100 per cent up to me. Its about how you handle life and the parts of it you allow to affect you.

How would you describe your future in three words?

Successful, eventful, Fulfilling
